Mike Tyson left his opponent out in just 8 seconds with one of the best knockouts of all time in amateur fighting

Mike Tyson showed just how powerful he is, scoring an eight-second knockout as an amateur.

Heavyweight legend ‘Iron Mike’ had a successful career in boxing, achieving everything at the professional level, retiring in 2005 after reigning as undisputed world champion from 1987 to 1990.

But his credentials were certainly proven at the amateur level, where he won a gold medal at the 1981 Junior Olympics in the heavyweight division.

And in the final, the authoritative American made a statement like no other with a historic event that lasted just eight seconds against rival Joe Cortez.

Tyson quickly emerged from his corner with one intention and began throwing some vicious shots.

But after just eight seconds with Cortez clearly out of his reach, the then-15-year-old landed a crushing right-left combination that sent his opponent sprawling to the canvas.

Cortez was left flat on his back, and the referee immediately stopped the fight while seeking medical attention for the silver medalist.

Tyson’s quick knockout came as no surprise, with the amateur champion considered one of the most dynamic punchers of the era.

He then won another gold medal in the 1982 version of the tournament, before moving on to the professional ranks with a huge reputation.

A successful career developed just as quickly, seeing him become the youngest heavyweight champion of the world at the age of 20, when he beat Trevor Berbick with another knockout in November 1986.

The fearsome puncher went on to share rings with some greats, including Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and Larry Holmes, in a stint that saw him become one of the greatest of all time.

Tyson went out with a whimper at the end of his career, losing three of his final four fights before hanging up his gloves in 2005.

Mike Tyson urged to cancel fight with Jake Paul after new training video leaves boxing fans divided

After returning to face Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition in 2020, Tyson has now announced a new comeback fight on July 20 against Jake Paul.

Surprisingly, the contest was sanctioned as a professional fight, despite the 31-year age gap between the two.

Tyson released a series of training clips to justify to fans his comeback at 58, but the public still urged both men to call off the showdown.

He also received numerous medical warnings from doctors about his condition if he took any hits as a veteran, but he ignored them to pursue a competition that will count on his record.
