Mike Pence calls Trump’s abortion policy a ‘slap in the face’ to ‘millions of Americans’: Former VP delivers scathing criticism of his former boss, suggests Republicans want to ‘wash their hands’ of the battle for life

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Monday criticized his former boss’s announcement that abortion should be left to the states, saying Donald Trump helped end Roe v Wade but Republicans no longer wanted to take responsibility responsibility for this issue.

“President Trump’s backtracking on the right to life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020,” Pence said in an article on X.

He continued: “By nominating and supporting the confirmation of conservative judges, the Trump-Pence administration helped send Roe v. Wade into the ashes of history, where she belongs and gave the pro-life movement the opportunity to compassionately support women and the unborn. children.’

Pence criticized GOP politicians saying they are.they are all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life.

The former vice president said Republicans “win at life” when they “boldly speak the truth.”

He also vowed that he would never give in.until we see the sanctity of life restored to the center of American law in every state in this country.

Former Vice President Mike Pence blasted his former boss for his abortion ad, calling the ex-president’s stance a “slap in the face” to pro-life Americans.

Pence’s harsh criticism came after Trump posted a four-minute video on social media in which he announced his latest stance on abortion ahead of the 2024 election.

The highly anticipated announcement follows months in which Trump delayed revealing his stance on abortion, as the issue has been a motivator for Democrats since the overturning of Roe.

Pence’s scathing message was one of several disappointed responses to Trump’s video from anti-abortion politicians and advocates Monday who have pushed for a federal ban on abortion since Roe fell in 2022 .

Trump released a four-minute video on Truth Social on Monday, saying he supports states' rights to pass laws regarding limits on abortion – and does not support a federal ban after previously signaling that he could support a federal ban.

Trump said Monday that it should be up to states to determine abortion laws and that he would not support a federal ban, even though last month he signaled he might support one.

This followed reports that Trump was considering backing a 15-week abortion ban – meaning women would not be able to legally terminate their pregnancies after the first trimester.

“We have abortion where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine it by vote or legislation or maybe both, and whatever they decide, it must be the law of the country,” Trump, 77, said in the video.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said in a statement Monday that the group was “deeply disappointed” by Trump’s position and said putting the issue up to states “cedes the national debate to Democrats.”

The anti-abortion group said it would continue to “work tirelessly to defeat President Biden” in November.

Pence previously said he would not support Trump in the 2024 election. The relationship between the two men deteriorated after Pence decided to certify the 2020 election despite Trump’s false claims that the election had been stolen.

Pence was the first vice president to join the anti-abortion March for Life rally in Washington, D.C. in 2017, just days after Trump took office.

Trump became the first sitting president to address the March for Life in person a few years later in 2020.

During the Trump administration, Pence pledged to help end abortion in the United States and advocated for Trump to appoint judges who would overturn Roe v Wade.

In his video, Trump thanked the six justices who overturned Roe and praised them for their “courage.” The former president said he was “proudly the person responsible” for ending Roe v Wade.
