Mike Lynch’s yacht sank live: British entrepreneur’s body found but teenage daughter still missing

Italian authorities are continuing their search for the 18-year-old daughter of tech mogul Mike Lynch, who has been identified as one of five bodies recovered from the wreck of the Bayesian superyacht.

The Italian coastguard also confirmed that the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo have all been recovered.

The boat sank during a violent storm in the early hours of Monday, and the bodies of four people, including a “corpulent man”, were found on Wednesday.

The head of Sicilian civil protection, Salvatore Cocina, said the priority remained the search for the sixth missing passenger.

One man, the boat’s captain, Recaldo Thomas, was confirmed dead on Monday, while 15 other people survived the disaster.

Morgan Stanley Banker Jonathan Bloomer Confirmed Dead by Authorities

Morgan Stanley banker Jonathan Bloomer has been identified as one of five bodies recovered from the wreck of the Bayesian.

Mr Bloomer, 70, was called to the stand at a trial involving Mike Lynch.

The banker was the chairman of the audit committee of Autonomy, the company Mr. Lynch owned that was under investigation in a high-profile fraud case related to a 2011 sale.

Mr. Bloomer has been chairman of Morgan Stanley International since 2018, having begun his career in 1974 at the now-defunct accounting firm Arthur Anderson.

Divers face difficult search operations

The search operation for the missing was described as “complex” from the outset, with the boat stationed 50 metres below the sea surface.

Debris and furniture clutter the yacht’s narrow passages, with divers having just 10 minutes underwater before suffering nausea, known as “body aches.”

The Vigili del Fuoco firefighters said they were accessing the ship through natural entrances, without making any openings.

Remote-controlled underwater vehicles were used, with the participation of naval units and cave divers, the Italian coastguard said.

The priority is to find the last passenger, the head of the civil protection agency said

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicilian civil protection, confirmed that the fifth body had been found on Thursday, after four others were recovered on Wednesday.

The identities of the bodies have not been confirmed by authorities, although local and international media reported that some had been identified.

The search resumed on Thursday morning, with Mr Cocina saying an investigation would be opened in due course but that the priority was to find the last missing passenger.

The ship’s captain, James Cutfield, was reportedly questioned by authorities for two hours as they began speaking to all of the crew members.

Seven key unanswered questions surrounding the sinking of the Bayesian

As the Bayesian lies on its side, 50 metres beneath the now-balmy waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely operated underwater vehicles and cave divers are trying to refloat the yacht, which experts will examine in the coming days.

It will take weeks for Ambrogio Cartosio, Termini Imerese’s chief prosecutor, and his team to establish whether the sinking of the Bayesian was due to human error, an unforeseeable weather event or whether someone else was responsible.

They said they would interview survivors in the coming days – some of whom were pictured leaving the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, which has become the headquarters for survivors, police and rescuers.

My colleague Barney Davis examines some of the key questions left unanswered in this report:

British tourist held baby above waves after yacht sank, Italian doctor says

An Italian doctor at the hospital where British tourist Charlotte Emsley and her one-year-old daughter were taken said the mother was holding her baby above the waves after the yacht sank.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, from the Di Cristina children’s hospital in Palermo, told the PA news agency: “The child and the mother went to the hotel near Porticello on Tuesday, they are both in good condition.

“Obviously the mother and husband were so devastated by what happened, it was a tragedy for them.

“She told me that two minutes after falling asleep with her baby, they were in the water, she didn’t understand how it happened, it was dark. Her partner was not with her, he was in another room.

“She held the child in her arms above the waves, for a few seconds the baby was in the water but she saved him.”
