An investigation into manslaughter has been opened following the deaths of seven people following the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among those killed after the Bayesian superyacht sank near Porticello at around 5am local time on Monday.
Five of the bodies aboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin that “was not theirs”, prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano revealed at a news conference in the nearby town of Termini Imerese on Saturday.
He told reporters that the Italian air force said the sinking was likely caused by a localized, powerful gust of wind that descended from a thunderstorm and spread quickly after hitting the ground.
Ambrogio Cartosio, chief prosecutor of Termini Imeres, said authorities will examine whether the captain, crew, supervisors, the ship’s builder or others could be responsible for the deaths.
Meanwhile, fresh tributes have been paid to the victims, including Mr Lynch’s daughter Hannah. The Bayesian’s chief stewardess Sasha Murray described the teenager as a “diamond in a sea of stars”.
Hannah’s sister Esme said she was “the most amazing, supportive, joyful sister.”

Giant masts, moon pools and exploration pods: how the world of yachts became supersized
The sinking of Mike Lynch’s ‘unsinkable’ yacht was not only a heartbreaking tragedy, but also gave us a rare insight into the superyacht fraternity. Here, Boat International’s Lucy Dunn looks at a group that is both secretive and innovative, and asks how such a sophisticated yacht could have sunk…

Crimes likely committed, prosecutor says
Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said it was “likely that crimes were committed” in connection with the yacht’s sinking.
He told reporters that the sinking could be the responsibility of the captain, crew, supervisors, the shipbuilder or others.
He added: “We will establish responsibility for each element – this will be done by the investigation, so we cannot do it prematurely.
“I think it is likely that crimes have been committed – that it could be a case of manslaughter – but we can only establish that if you give us time to investigate.
“The timing of the media is completely different from that of a prosecutor. We need a minimum amount of time to reach a proper scientific conclusion.”

Summary: Post-mortem examinations still to be carried out
No information has yet been drawn from the examination of the seven deceased people, the prosecutor in charge of the case said.
Asked about the possibility of carrying out autopsies, Raffaele Cammarano told a news conference in Italy: “There are a whole series of preliminary steps to take before the autopsies.”
The yacht had been hit by a downward gust and Italian officials said they would look at how it might affect a vehicle and not other vessels nearby, according to a translation of the conference.
The investigation is currently an Italian case with local implications, but chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said: “I cannot tell you with certainty that the investigation will be exclusively Italian.”
He added: “There will certainly be developments on this.”

Hannah was “a diamond in a sea of stars” who vowed to save her parents
The daughter of tech mogul Mike Lynch, who died with her father on the luxury superyacht Bayesian, has been described as a “diamond in a sea of stars” by a survivor of the tragedy.
Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, who was reportedly rescued from the yacht, said: “Those who knew her know Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars. Bright, beautiful and always shining.”
“What most people may not have seen is the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she had with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.
“When she was swimming with them, she often said that if anything happened, she would save them.
“I have no doubt that the Irish and Latino fire burning in his soul kept that fiery determination alive.”

What is a “downburst”?
Authorities said the superyacht was hit by a downburst and Italian authorities said they would look into how it might affect a vehicle and not other vessels nearby, according to a translation of the conference.
A downburst is an intense gust of wind at ground level emanating from the strong downdraft of a thunderstorm; the wind often blows radially from a point source, unlike the rotating winds associated with a tornado.
Downbursts typically last only a few minutes and can be particularly dangerous for aviation.
They have been blamed for a number of air crashes over the years, although the risk is usually well predicted by meteorologists, allowing pilots to avoid them.
