Mike Johnson may attach proof-of-citizenship voting law to interim spending bill

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Republican leaders are reportedly discussing the possibility of attaching a bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote to a stopgap spending bill.

The federal government will shut down on September 30 if Congress fails to pass a spending bill, and congressional leaders are considering a short-term spending bill that would fund the government beyond Election Day, November 5.

Johnson and Republican leaders are now considering attaching the SAVE Act, a bill that would require proof of citizenship to vote in a federal election, to the short-term spending bill that would continue to fund the government through March 2025.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced the bill and said Breitbart News Daily In June, there was “repeated evidence” of non-citizens voting.

“Let me say this about the general state of the election issue,” Roy said. “We have repeated evidence of people who are here illegally – or legally – but who are not American citizens and who are voting.”

“Non-citizen voting poses a threat to the integrity of elections,” House Speaker Johnson said in a policy briefing on the bill.

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) said in a statement after the bill passed in July:

Voting is a sacred right of American citizens, and illegal immigrants should never be able to vote in our elections. The Biden administration has allowed millions of illegal immigrants into our country, and we must ensure that illegal immigrants cannot register to vote and influence our elections. This tells you everything you need to know: the Biden administration opposes this common-sense effort and wants to maintain loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to vote while keeping our southern border wide open. I will continue to fight to preserve the integrity of elections and prevent illegal immigrants from voting.

A 2022 YouGov survey found that 65% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship to vote in elections, including 48% of Democrats, 62% of undecided voters, and 88% of Republicans.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) wrote Monday: “Hats off to @SpeakerJohnson “I think the Democrats are wrong to want to discourage non-resident citizens from voting. They’re going to have to explain that.”
