DEL RIO, Texas – The border patrol reported the arrest of a migrant family who crossed the Rio Grande in freezing temperatures on Wednesday. The family managed to ford the river with a child with special needs and a disabled woman in a wheelchair.

Shortly after midnight, the group was spotted by infrared cameras. Officers discovered that a woman was confined to a wheelchair and a child in the group was considered to have special needs. The family made it through in the dark and landed on American soil with no apparent injury.

Del Rio is currently at the epicenter of an increase in migrant crossings across the southwest border. In fiscal year 2021, the sector ranked second for migrant apprehensions, behind the Rio Grande valley. In September, the Del Rio area received considerable media attention after more than 15,000 migrants, mostly Haitians, overwhelmed law enforcement at all levels.

The Del Rio sector serves communities smaller than the Rio Grande Valley. The region lacks adequate medical facilities, transport and shelter to cope with the increased traffic. Throughout 2021, the industry faced overcrowding of facilities and staff shortages.

As an interim solution, Sector Del Rio is releasing migrants to the United States under certain circumstances and has enlisted the help of border patrol officers visiting northern stations.
