Microsoft is starting to open the Windows update to any third party application that must be updated. The software giant now allows developers to register for a private overview of what it calls the Windows Update orchestration platform, which will allow Windows Update to take care of any updates of applications or drivers in the future. It is largely focused on commercial applications, but it will be open to all applications or management tools.
Windows update is widely used to update the main parts of Windows now, alongside key drivers for devices and even install certain third -party management applications for devices. “We create a vision of a unified and intelligent update orchestration platform capable of supporting any update (applications, pilots, etc.) to be orchestrated alongside Windows updates”, ” explains Angie ChenA product manager at Microsoft.
Most applications on Windows are updated independently, using update mechanisms that developers have themselves created. The new Windows update orchestration platform of Microsoft will allow applicants of applications to take advantage of planned updates according to user activity, battery status and even durable energy synchronization.
Developers will also be able to cling directly to the native Windows update notifications and be listed in the historic part of the Windows Update application. Microsoft will support MSIX / APPX package applications, and even certain personalized WIN32 applications. All applications that are part of the Windows Update orchestrator will also obtain future improvements in the Windows Plapform for underlying update.
Microsoft has tried in the past to convince developers to list their applications in the Microsoft Store, where the store can manage updates or developers can continue to use their own update mechanisms. Although the Windows store has improved considerably in recent years, there are still applications and missing companies prefer to update their own commercial applications independently.
Microsoft Windows Package Manager has also tried to solve some of the installation and update problems on Windows, but this is not a widely used way to install and manage applications outside of power users and developers.
The integration of more application updates in Windows Update is certainly logical for a variety of applications, and it will be interesting to see if it will be used mainly by companies or if large developers like Adobe could move to the Windows Update system instead of a separate installer that runs in the background.
