Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was mocked on social media after his two back-to-back slips led to goals at Newcastle.

The Dutchman earned praise during an impressive debut season at Tottenham but endured a nightmarish first half at St James’ Park.

Van de Ven was caught behind for Newcastle’s first goal, sliding after being turned over by Alexander Isak, with the Swedish striker firing past the hosts in the 30th minute.

Newcastle doubled their advantage two minutes later in similar fashion, Van de Ven falling to the turf again with Anthony Gordon exploding inside a second to secure a 2-0 half-time lead.

Rival fans took to social media to uncover Van de Ven’s difficult first half at St James’ Park.

PLAYER RATINGS: Tottenham’s backline endured a dismal afternoon, with one defender scoring just THREE.

A series of memes were posted showing the Dutchman’s slip, including a reference to Steven Gerrard’s infamous slide for Liverpool against Chelsea.

Rio Ferdinand, who described Van de Ven as a pre-match Rolls-Royce, admitted the defender had a half to forget.

The former Man United centre-back highlighted how the defender failed to slow down on two occasions, leading to him slipping.

“We’ve talked about how good he is this season, but today it’s 45 minutes to forget,” Ferdinand said.

“Your Isak shows great skill, but you must slow your feet to defend yourself.

“If you don’t slow your feet down, you can’t change direction, that’s happening here.

“He doesn’t change, he’s able to change direction because he came too fast, he didn’t slow down and was eventually put on his butt.”

He added of Gordon’s goal: “It looks worse and worse for Van der Ven every time you see it.

“He doesn’t slow his feet, at that point you can’t sit up, you can’t turn, so it becomes impossible to turn in another direction.”

Van de Ven and Tottenham’s nightmare afternoon continued when the Dutchman was caught by Isak in the second half.

Isak ran away to score Newcastle’s third goal of the afternoon.
