Pope Leo XIV appeared on the balcony of the Saint-Pierre Basilica in the city of the Vatican shortly after his appointment, saying to the crowd gathered below in a speech translated by Italian, “God loves us all, evil will not prevail.”
“Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and between us, we will go ahead,” he continued. “We are disciples of Christ, Christ has us before us, and the world needs his light. Humanity needs him as a bridge to reach God and his love. You help us build bridges with dialogue and meet so that we can all be a single people, always in peace.”
