MICHAEL PILLSBURY: Well the The Chinese are suspicious of us, Brian, and they think the One China policy is going to be changed. They have several reasons for this. The “One China” policy was supposed to somehow prevent any US defense of Taiwan. We couldn’t store ammunition there. We couldn’t have our own armed forces there. We couldn’t do war planning. They could not do joint military exercises. As part of the “One China” policy, we closed our defense command in Taiwan. This all goes back 40, 50 years. It’s starting to move now. Congress is very angry that Taiwan is some kind of sitting duck. There is no real deterrent power. And so basic military common sense tells us that a lot of people in Congress, we can’t that this “One China” policy is so inflexible. We have to mount a defense of Taiwan because of the threats from China over the past two or three years.
