Michael Douglas, 79, says Biden is not too old for a second term

  • The Oscar winner appeared on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS on Sunday.
  • Polls show voters are increasingly concerned about Biden’s fitness for office.

Michael Douglas has given his opinion on whether his contemporary President Joe Biden is too old to run for president.

During an appearance on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS on Sunday, the 19-year-old Oscar winner was asked what he thought of the 81-year-old’s abilities given his age.

“Well, I think I walk a little like him, and people I’ve talked to say he’s as sharp as a thumbtack… He’s fine,” Douglas said.

“We all have a memory problem. As we get older, we forget names. He overcame a stutter in his life and sometimes he might (stutter), but let’s just say his entire cabinet, including his vice president, would be more than happy to work with him again in the next term.

“I can’t say the same about the other candidate in the running, because no one in his cabinet for 2016 wants to get involved with him.”

Zakaria pushed Douglas again, asking if Biden would be able to lead the country in four years, when he will be well into his 80s.

“I think he’ll be fine, thank you very much,” repeated the actor, who plays Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s Franklin, which depicts the founding father’s time in Paris during the Revolutionary War.

“This is probably the most important election of my lifetime. This is the most critical moment of my life that I can remember. We need someone in charge, who has some experience and knows how to manage a global situation.

Douglas’ comments come as a poll last month found voters’ biggest concern about President Biden is his “mental acuity” ahead of the 2024 re-election, with his age and ability to complete a second term being also at the forefront of Americans’ concerns.

The Deseret/HarrisX poll found that 34% of 1,007 voters ranked Biden’s mental acuity among their top three concerns about the president’s reelection in November — including 22% of Democrats.

Douglas’ comments come as a poll last month found that voters’ biggest concern about President Biden is his “mental acuity” heading into the 2024 re-election.

The same poll shows voters are far less concerned about former President Donald Trump's mental acuity and age, even though he is only four years younger than Biden, 81.

The same poll shows voters are far less concerned about former President Donald Trump’s mental acuity and age — even though he is only four years younger than 81-year-old Biden.

Voters are increasingly concerned about Biden’s mental and physical fitness to hold office — not only because of his age, but also his frequent trips, falls and verbal gaffes.

Meanwhile, the same survey shows that voters are much more divided on the issues plaguing 77-year-old former President Donald Trump.

The top three issues – with a gap of just 2 percent – show that the top issues for Trump voters are his legal problems (24 percent), deepening divisions in the United States (23 percent) and its excessive use of executive power (22 percent). .

Trump faces four separate indictments and dozens of charges, with cases intensifying in the months leading up to the fall general election. The first charges were filed in March 2023 in the Manhattan document falsification case related to Stormy Daniels’ secret payment.

The other three indictments that followed are the Federal Election Subversion Case, the Georgia Election Interference Case, and the Southern District of Florida Classified Records Mishandling Case.

Notably, even though Trump is only four years younger than Biden, his mental acuity didn’t come into play until the sixth problem listed among those surveyed. And his age was cited as the 14th question by voters, with only 8 percent citing it as one of their top three questions.

Multiple polls find the majority of voters don’t want a rematch between Biden and Trump in 2020 – but that’s exactly where the poll is headed after both geriatricians secured the delegates needed for their respective parties’ nominations at conventions this summer.

The HarrisX poll conducted Feb. 26-27 shows 14% of respondents say Biden’s age is their top issue, and 13% say his mental acuity is their top issue.
