Michael Cohen trains Trump’s stupid lawyer

HAS Donald TrumpThursday’s secret trial, his former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen had a legal lesson for Trump’s lawyers.

Cohen, prosecution witness, was cross-examined by Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanchewho asked Cohen about conversations the former Trump staffer had secretly recorded.

Blanche, in a stern tone, asked Cohen if he had ever told anyone he was recording them, and reportedly seemed surprised when Cohen said no.

Cohen calmly told Blanche, “It’s not illegal in New York. » Blanche seemed offended by this response.

“Mr. Cohen, I didn’t ask you if you were breaking the law, “Blanche replied.

In New York State, for a recording to be made legally, the consent of only one party is required. This means that one party to the recorded conversation must give permission to comply with the law, and Cohen, as the person responsible for the recordings, had this consent himself.

Earlier, Blanche had pressed Cohen about recorded conversations that privilegedlike those between lawyer and client, but he probably wished he hadn’t.

“You understand that it is unethical to record a conversation with your client, there are many opinions from the New York Bar on this subject. But you’re not supposed to record your client,” Blanche said.

“Well, there is the exception rule when it comes to crime and fraud,” Cohen replied, referring to the case in question.

Cohen has testified all this week about his role in Trump’s plan to cover up an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election by paying her off with Cohen’s help. The Republican presidential candidate faces 34 criminal charges for allegedly falsifying business records with the intent to commit an underlying crime. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
