A statue of iconic AIADMK leader and former chief minister MG Ramachandran was vandalized by miscreants in Avaniyapuram near Madurai in Tamil Nadu, police said on Monday (October 6).

A large number of AIADMK cadres gathered here today and staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the culprits, who police said had damaged the statue on the night of October 5.

“I consider this a despicable act committed by cowards who cannot tackle head-on the fame of the revolutionary leader and his policies. The achievements and fame of the great leader cannot be diminished or altered in the minds of the people by damaging his statue,” he said.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Palaniswami urged the Tamil Nadu government and police to act quickly and stop “anti-social elements trying to disrupt public peace” by indulging in such acts.
