Mexican president changes his mind on welcoming migrants expelled from other countries

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum appears to have had a change of heart and has been receptive to the idea of welcoming migrants from other countries who are expected to be expelled by the Trump administration later this month.

During his daily news conference Friday, Sheinbaum said Mexico and the United States could work together in cases where migrants are deported to Mexico instead of being sent back to their country of origin. The Mexican politician said Mexico could take in migrants from certain countries or seek compensation from the United States to send them back to their countries of origin.

During the news conference, Sheinbaum asserted that Mexico had a plan to welcome newly deported migrants and suggested that details still needed to be worked out with the United States, the AP reported. These new claims directly contradict previous statements by the Mexican president, who publicly said she would oppose the Trump administration and fight the expected increase in deportations.

US President Donald J. Trump has said that once he takes office, his administration will deport large numbers of migrants. As Breitbart Texas reported, Sheinbaum’s administration is preparing border cities and states to welcome newly deported Mexican citizens. However, the Mexican president previously said her government would not accept migrants from other countries.
