With the Mets and Pete Alonso still estranged financially and a split looking likely now, the Mets may well stay in-house for the starting outfield spot. Which means Brett Baty has a great chance to get his third chance at third base, especially with Ronnie Mauricio coming off an injury year.
Baty has developed into a good third baseman and has significant, if sporadic, power. But the big question remains: Is New York the right place for him?
A rival executive calls Baty a “change of scenery guy.”
As aggressive as the Mets were in landing Juan Soto, it appears they’ve taken a decidedly more jaded approach with longtime star Alonso. Even after Alonso showed a willingness to consider a three-year contract (with an opt-out), the Mets haven’t shown much interest in meeting the salary demands of the player who has hit the most home runs in NL since entering the league in 2019.
