A massive $39 million shipment of illicit drugs has been discovered floating in large bottles of olive oil as a suspected smuggler is charged.

The 281kg stash of liquid methamphetamine was found in July 2021 inside a lorry in Sydney’s western suburb of Fairfield.

It was the AFP-led National Anti-Gangs Squad (NAGS) that made the discovery.

A Granville man has been arrested and charged with importation and attempted possession of a commercial quantity of an illegally imported border controlled drug, namely methamphetamine.

The 29-year-old’s home was raided last September, where officers seized phones and a computer.

AFP believes the man is associated with a transnational organized crime group that imports illegal drugs and is linked to Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMCGs).

The man is believed to have been linked to the foreign shipment of extra virgin olive oil through Operation Bendigo – an illicit drug investigation.

Footage released by police showed the large plastic bottles of olive oil in boxes imported from abroad, in which the illicit drugs were floating.

The estimated wholesale value of the methamphetamine is around $39 million, AFP said.

National Anti-Gangs Squad Superintendent Anthony Conway said anyone who joins the OMCG will “regret it for life”.

“AFP, together with our state and territory partner agencies, will continue to take deliberate action to better protect Australians from organized crime groups, including OMCGs.” said Superintendent Conway.

The National Anti-Gangs Squad (NAGS) is made up of members of the AFP, state and territory police and the Australian Tax Office.

The man will face Parramatta Local Court on November 22.
