Metal Gear Solid Delta Visual Filters Let You Recreate the Original PS2 Look of MGS 3

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remakes the 2004 stealth action game with all the modern bells and whistles (and realistically rendered pores) you’d expect, but a few filters will still let you recreate the original Metal Gear Solid 3 look. In other words, the yellow pee filter is making a comeback.

“After the new trailer, some commenters said they would like to play with the colors of the original,” explained producer Noriaki Okamura in the latest episode of Metal Gear – Production Hotline on YouTube. “We have several color filters that you can change between, applicable whether you play with New Style or Legacy Style,” he continued, referring to the updated and old control settings from the PS2 version that are both in the remake.

The two screenshots below compare the same photo in two different filters: the “Normal” color palette introduced by the remake and the “Legacy” filter which attempts to echo the yellow-green hues of the original game. Scroll a little further and the embedded video will give you a look at two more filters – a “Sepia” that looks like it’s been soaked in tea bags and a “Retro” that’s much more purple – starting at around 7 minutes. .

Metal Gear Solid Delta’s changes to the original game’s art style were slightly controversial with fans, so it’s nice to see a little backtracking option that might alleviate some complaints. Other remakes from the HD era, like Shadow of the Colossus and Halo 2 Anniversary for example, have also been criticized for ignoring the artistic intent of the original in favor of a cleaned and smoothed “realistic” look, so I hope the above trend continues in future remakes/reimaginings/remasters.

Metal Gear Solid Delta is set to release later this year on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

A producer for the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake also said that Konami “would love nothing better” than to have OG director Hideo Kojima return to work on the series.
