Meta Policy Chef: Trump could be our defender against EU regulations
  • Meta’s head of the Meta policy said that society would complete Trump when it feels targeted by regulators abroad.
  • The company believes that Trump will defend American companies which he considers to be treated unfairly.
  • Meta has already faced billions of dollars in fines from European Union regulators.

The European Union has been enormous pain for meta over the years because it has faced billions of dollars in fines from its regulators.

The owner of Facebook could now have a new weapon in his artillery to defend himself against the future application abroad: President Donald Trump.

Meta World Affairs Director Joel Kaplan, a panel of European decision -makers told that the company would not hesitate to let Trump know when he estimated that he had been discriminated against by the EU. He suggested that Trump could intervene to help.

“President Trump has clearly indicated since he took office that he will defend American companies and American affairs abroad, and in particular if he considers that US companies have been treated unjustly,” said Declared Kaplan, speaking on Sunday at the Munich security conference.

“What he decides to do on this subject is clearly to him, but I do not think that we will avoid saying when we think that the application of these laws is directed towards us in a way that goes beyond What Parliament has adopted and what institutions have adopted, “Kaplan said.

Meta has faced massive fines by EU regulators in recent years. In 2023, the company was struck by a fine of 1.2 billion euros (approximately $ 1.3 billion) of the Irish data protection committee, which said it had Not respected a requirement for data confidentiality under the General Data Protection Regulations, or GDPR. Meta said He would appeal the decision.

In 2024, the European Commission inflicted a fine of around 798 million euros (nearly $ 840 million) against the company, alleging that it created unfair negotiation conditions by connecting Facebook Marketplace to its platform social. Meta said he would call on the decision and, in February, he announced that this would allow suppliers of classified rival advertisements to publish on Marketplace.

Kaplan’s comments arrive at a time of change in Meta, which has social applications like Facebook and Instagram, as well as the WhatsApp messaging platform. Since Trump was elected, the company hit Kaplan, who previously was a republican strategist, to play its superior political role, replacing Nick Clegg.

Meta also adjusted her approach to moderation of the content in the wake of Trump’s victory, announcing plans to replace third party checks with community notes generated by users, similar to what was implemented by Elon Musk , belonging to X, formerly Twitter. Kaplan approached this change in his discussion on Sunday.

“People have different perspectives on what is disinformation and what is not,” he said. “The approach we adopt in the future and starting in the United States this year is to use the various voices that exist on our platform to assess what they see and provide additional information.”

When he was contacted to comment, a Meta spokesperson directed Business Insider to a press release on the appearance of Kaplan. The White House did not respond to a request for comments.
