Meta has dismissed an undisclosed number of employees in reality laboratories, its material division and virtual reality, this week as part of a broader restructuring effort.
The cuts affect Oculus Studios, the company’s internal game division for Quest helmets, and the team behind Supernatural, the VR Fitness Meta application acquired for more than $ 400 million.
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the changes, saying that “certain teams in the Oculus studios are undergoing changes in structure and roles that have had an impact on the size of the team”. The spokesman added that the company remains “determined to invest in mixed reality experiences, including fitness and games”.
The supernatural team has confirmed in a Facebook publication that the changes will mean less weekly training for application subscribers.
These layoffs follow a broader reduction earlier this year. In January, Meta announced that it would eliminate nearly 4,000 roles because CEO Mark Zuckerberg sought to “increase the performance mark”. The documents previously obtained by Business Insider have shown that performance -based cuts affected at least 560 employees working in Meta’s reality laboratories. Almost half was part of the Meta Horizon team.
In a note obtained by Bi earlier this year, the chief of the Meta CTO and the chief of the reality laboratories Andrew Bosworth described the “most critical” year of his eight -year term in Reality Labs.
“This year probably determines whether all this effort will be decreasing as a visionary work or a legendary mishap,” he wrote. Bosworth also said that Horizon Worlds on Mobile should succeed in the business of the company’s long -term metavages of the company to survive.
In January, Meta reorganized its division of reality laboratories. Meta’s head of the Meta farm, Javier Olivan, now leads the team previously led by the former CO head of reality Dan Reed. Other leaders in reality laboratories also report to the main leaders of Meta’s main cases, showing that the company makes this division a more important objective.
Although Meta cuts the staff, 495 roles remained open in reality laboratories, according to the company’s career site. A spokesperson told BI that affected employees are eligible for internal opportunities, and many have already been twinned to open positions for interviews.
“If you choose not to look for another role at Meta or if you have not managed to find a new role, your date of termination will take place on May 23, 2025,” an internal email told an employee affected by Bi.
The penis reported earlier on these cuts.
