A coastal storm is developing and is poised to impact Maine and New England on one of the busiest travel days of the year. Expect snow to arrive early Wednesday morning, quickly changing to rain along the coast. In the afternoon, heavy rain and strong winds will blow along the coastline. At the same time, mountainous regions will experience heavy snowfall, leading to poor visibility. The system is expected to persist through Wednesday evening but is expected to diminish by midnight. Mountainous areas will receive most of the snow. Accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are likely. The area just inland (Sanford, Windham, Gray, Lewiston/Auburn, and Augusta) will receive some accumulating snow but will likely change to rain with a slushy mess on the roads. Along the coast, rain could be heavy in the afternoon. Rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible. The weather looks much better on Thanksgiving Day for travel with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 40s. Another storm could bring more rain or snow on Sunday. Check back for updates as our busy winter season begins to get underway.
