Lionel Messi watched from the bench while 10 Inter Miami players stood for a 1-0 victory against Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer on Sunday. The Argentinian was not used by coach Javier Mascherano in a match where Miami spent a large part of the time on the rear foot after goalkeeper Oscar Ustari was sent in the 38th minute.
He marked the third consecutive match that Messi failed to appear for Miami after he did not go to Houston for the 4-1 victory last week in MLS before watching the 2-0 victory against the Jamaica rider during the first mine match of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Thursday.
Mascherano said he managed the workload of the 37 -year -old World Cup winner and although his absence was a disappointment for fans, Miami did not pay the price on the ground.
Charlotte, trained by the Englishman Dean Smith, the former manager of Aston Villa, was the best team throughout the game, but turned out to be unable to convert their abundant possession to the chances of real objective.
The visitors offered early indicators of the place where their threats were, with Wilfried Zaha, the former winger of Crystal Palace, showing lightning of his skills on the left side while the pace of the Israeli winger Liel Abada was obvious on the opposite wing.
Miami created little, Ashley Westwood dictating the game in the center of the midfielder for the North Carolina team, and they found themselves in difficulty when Ustari received a straight red after leaving his line and dropped Zaha.
The teams went without a safe blow to the break, but it only took a few seconds for Miami to strike after the interval with a deliciously constructed goal.
Tadeo Allende was in a rear heel towards Luis Suarez and the veteran made the ball with a chip that the Argentinian spread, then buried in the lower corner.
It was the fourth goal of this season, in all the competitions for Allende who joined Miami on loan from the Spanish club Celta Vigo.
Miami has chosen to defend their advance, seated deeply and in number, frustrating Charlotte who had trouble unraveling their defense despite 13 corners.
Their best chance came in the 65th minute when Zaha whispered a nasty cross from the left, but Patrick Agymanman’s goalkeeper broke out next to the post.
The crowd chanted a Messi cameo, but Mascherano opted for defensive changes while the team from southern Florida firmly held to maintain their unfainly start to the season.
No risk
“Well, the truth is that in the case of Leo, we had thought of giving him minutes at a given time of the game, but when we went a man and with him having come out for so long, we thought it was better to keep it (on the bench) and not to take risks in this case,” said Mascherano, who is not explaining what would be `risked ” by Messi.
There was no clear indication of an injury to Messi with the medical staff who were concerned about the “ overload ” on his muscles from the start of the season, resulting in the careful approach of his coach.
Smith was left to think about the sloppy start of his team in the second half.
“The only reason we take nothing today is because we give a really bad goal with a lack of concentration directly from the start. It is difficult when I thought we were the best team,” he said.
The Los Angeles Galaxy champions fell to their third consecutive defeat of the season with a 3-0 defeat at home against St.lis City.
The German Cedric Teuchet put the visitors forward, bringing the ball back to the house in the 44th minute after the Galaxy goalkeeper Novak Micovic dropped a corner.
Teuchert then transformed the supplier, three minutes after the interval, ending a break with a perfect pass for compatriot Marcel Hartel who did it 2-0.
After St.louis survived an intense galaxy pressure, the Brazilian Gabriel Pec missing a goalkeeper, Simon Becher finished the impressive victory after another fast counterattack.
The Galaxy is the first team in MLS history to start its defense of the title with three consecutive defeats.
