MEP Kaili accused of corruption by Belgian prosecutors: Reports – POLITICO
Belgian prosecutors on Sunday charged Greek MEP Eva Kaili and three others with corruption, according to local media.
Kaili was arrested on Friday in connection with a major bribery probe by Belgian authorities into an alleged illicit Qatar influence campaign.
Four of the six people arrested by police on Friday, including Kaili, have been charged by the prosecution with offenses related to criminal organization, corruption and money laundering, Belgian newspaper L’Echo reported.
Among the four people charged is Kaili’s partner, Francesco Giorgi, Le Soir reported. Giorgi is a parliamentary assistant to another MEP and founder of the NGO Fight Impunity.
Former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, president of Fight Impunity, has also been charged, according to Le Soir. An anonymous lobbyist was also charged, he added. All four will remain in custody.
Kaili’s father, also detained in connection with the investigation, has been released, as has union leader Luca Visentini, according to the newspaper.
Kaili has been suspended from her duties as vice-president of the European Parliament after being arrested in connection with the investigation, a spokeswoman for the president of the parliament, Roberta Metsola, said earlier.
The home of Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella was also searched on Saturday evening as part of the investigation.
