The summer box office season continued its slow start over Memorial Day weekend, hitting its lowest level in nearly 30 years due to poor performances from headliners “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie” with the voice of Chris Pratt.
“Garfield” finished with $31.1 million over the four-day weekend, according to Comscore estimate Monday, while “Furiosa” raked in $32 million — earning the latter the dubious distinction of lowest opening for a No. 1 Memorial Day movie in 29 years, excluding 2020, when theaters were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. (In 1995, “Casper” opened with a holiday weekend gross of $22 million, not adjusted for inflation, in its first four days.) Final numbers will be released later this week.
