First Lady Melania Trump wears an Adam Lippes silk wool coat and skirt with an ivory blouse this morning to the 2025 inauguration, where her husband Donald Trump will become the 47th president of the United States.
“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor of dressing our first lady, Ms. Melania Trump,” Lippes said in a statement. “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest artisans and I am very proud to show such work to the world.”
Ms. Trump, originally from Slovenia, is only the second immigrant to serve as First Lady in U.S. history. (Louisa Adams, born in London and wife of President John Quincy Adams, was the first.) Although she wore mostly European brands during her husband’s first term – Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen were two of his favorites – and during much of his recent campaign. By choosing Christian Dior on election night, Lippes’ choice seems particularly sharp. Much of the most recent Trump campaign has focused on strengthening the U.S. economy. The New York designer’s eponymous brand is an independent company just over a decade old, a markedly different choice from American fashion giant Ralph Lauren, who dressed the First Lady for the inauguration in 2017. Here, Mrs. Trump appears to emphasize these efforts, as opposed to the mixed messages sent during her husband’s first term. He would preach buying American and his wardrobe would tell a different story.
