Actor and director Mel Gibson revealed to NewsNation that his home was destroyed in the California wildfire, but he said the loss has “relieved” him “from the burden of my stuff.”
“It’s emotional,” Gibson told NewsNation. “I had my stuff there. I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders.” He also told NewsNation that he was thankful for the “generosity” of people in the neighborhood, and he is grateful that his large family was safe.
Gibson was appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience in Texas when his home burned down, according to NewsNation. He is one of multiple celebrities who lost homes in the blaze. Other stars who lost their homes in the fire include Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, Anthony Hopkins, Miles Teller, and more.
Gibson’s publicist confirmed to The Associated Press that Gibson’s Malibu home is “completely gone.”
Gibson told NewsNation that he was “ill at ease” during the podcast because he knew his community was on fire in California.
“I thought, ‘Eh, I wonder if my place is still there,’” Gibson said to NewsNation. “When I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there.”
Gibson told NewsNation that the area “was completely toasted. I’ve never seen such a complete burn,” adding, “I have never seen a place so perfectly burned, you could put it in an urn.”
On the Rogan podcast, Gibson expressed that he would be”surprised if my home is still there.”
He told Rogan that his son, a volunteer fireman, “sent me a video of my neighborhood, and it’s in flames. It looks like an inferno.”
Gibson told Rogan that he might not return to the California neighborhood, indicating that he also owns a home in Costa Rica.
Over the years, Gibson has amassed quite a property portfolio. In 2011, Business Insider reported, “From ranches in Montana to islands in Fiji, Mel owns or has owned an dazzling real estate portfolio worth tens of millions of dollars.”
Gibson, who is divorced from his wife and the mother of his first seven children, is dating Rosalind Ross, with whom he has a son, according to DailyMail.com. He also has a child from another relationship.
