Meet Shashi Kapoor’s co-star who became an overnight star, but had to part ways…

Actresses are often pressured to shed their bold, strong-willed image to ensure an easy transition into traditional, coy roles. The star we’re talking about today also had to give in to pressure to move away from what many perceived as a Westernized version of femininity and project a different image. Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), directed by Dev Anand, gave Zeenat Aman its role of escape. The film presented her as a free-spirited woman who did not hesitate to stand up to her family. A few years later, in 1973, Zeenat was again seen in a glamorous role in the popular film Yaadon Ki Baaraat. The star portrayed a confident woman and managed to establish herself as a leading actress in the showbiz industry. Don, also released in 1978, featured her in the role of a glamorous and modern woman. The same year, Zeenat also gave her most memorable performance in Raj Kapoor’s film Satyam Shivam Sundaram. For those who suspect nothing, she had played Rupa, a woman with a disfigured face. From what Zeenat had mentioned in her Instagram post, her modern image was clearly the obstacle she had to overcome to land the role. By the 1970s, Zeenat had gained huge recognition for her unconventional roles. Her image, characterized by mini-skirts and boots, did not match the rustic portrait of Rupa, a village girl with a scarred face.

Zeenat had admitted that her “modern image was the culprit” that made Kapoor never consider her for the role. “I was already a star in my own right, and his lack of interest in my casting started to irritate me,” she said in her post. For the unknown, the role required an actress who could easily do justice to Rupa’s purity and convey her struggle against society’s perception of her as a ‘fallen’ woman due to her outward appearance. Zeenat was determined to shed her glamor persona and convince Kapoor to offer her the role. That’s why she wore a ghagra choli, braided her hair with a parandi and wore a scar on her face with tissue paper and glue. This brave move helped her win the role and convince Kapoor.

Zeenat’s casting in Satyam Shivam Sundaram was clearly a turning point for her and the film. She continues to be revered for her nuanced and impeccable portrayal of Rupa. The film has also become a landmark in Bollywood, popular for its depiction and understanding of beauty and spirituality.
