McDonald’s to launch $5 meal deal to attract customers

McDonald’s is reportedly preparing to launch a $5 meal deal in a bid to attract low-income customers who have been priced out of the Golden Arches as its menu prices soared to include an $18 Big Mac and apples of hash browns for $6.

The affordable menu offering could include a McChicken or McDouble with fries and a drink, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg on condition of anonymity.

For reference, a McChicken at a Times Square McDonald’s outpost costs $5.59 for the sandwich alone, which includes a breaded chicken patty, shredded lettuce and mayonnaise.

Sources anonymously told Bloomberg that McDonald’s is preparing to launch a $5 meal deal that includes either a McChicken or McDouble, fries and a drink. It was not immediately clear when the economical meal would launch. P.A.

A McDouble, meanwhile — which features two beef patties, cheese, pickles and diced onions — sells at the same Midtown Manhattan McDonald’s store for $5.79.

A side of small fries at this location adds another $4.49, plus a small soft drink for $3.19.

While not offered in a $5 meal deal, a McDouble with the same items – the sandwich, fries and a drink – totals a whopping $13.47.

At $5, that’s a cost difference of almost 63%.

It was not immediately clear in which of the more than 13,500 McDonald’s locations in the United States this $5 meal deal would be rolled out — or when.

Representatives for McDonald’s did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Rumors about offering affordable meals come after McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors after reporting weaker-than-expected first-quarter results that the company needed to focus on affordability, given how price-weary diners have become.

Keeping costs low has yet to be a priority for McDonald’s this year, which began with about half of the nation’s states raising their minimum wages, including New York and California, where the hourly wage was raised to 16 bucks.

However, the Golden State also implemented a rule on April 1 requiring fast food workers to be paid $20 an hour.

To offset rising labor costs, several franchisees across the country have raised menu prices, including McDonald’s owner Scott Rodrick, who said he has already raised menu prices by 7% in 18 locations it owns and is now considering reducing store hours.

Customers were also furious after noticing a new Big Mac was going over $18 at a Connecticut location, where an Egg McMuffin costs $7.29 and a single side of hash browns would cost customers $5.69 hungry.

Others said they were salty that McDonald’s popular $1, $2 and $3 menu doesn’t actually contain anything that costs just $1.

Overall, the Chicago-based burger restaurant has cut its menu prices by 100% over the past decade, more than three times the U.S. inflation rate, according to a study by FinanceBuzz, which cites average prices nationally.

FinanceBuzz reported that a Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal costs $11.99, more than double the $5.39 it cost in 2014.

McDonald’s claimed the report was inaccurate.

As the price of a McDonald’s meal has increased, so has the rate of inflation. The consumer price index, which measures changes in the costs of everyday goods and services, increased at an annual rate of 3.5% in March.
