McDonald’s fans rejoice as popular breakfast item returns to U.S. menus after four years

McDonald’s has brought bagels back to its breakfast menu.

The fan favorites aren’t nationwide yet, but they’re in at least 1,200 restaurants — and could return to all 14,300 U.S. outlets later this year.

Bagels were first introduced at McDonald’s in late 2019, but were removed soon after when bosses simplified the menu in spring 2020 during the pandemic.

Since then, fans on Twitter, Reddit and Facebook have been calling for their return. They are so popular that a Facebook group with 13,000 members has sprung up called Where’s My McDonald’s Bagel?

Customers in California, Pennsylvania, Nashville, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Florida, Tennessee, Iowa, West Virginia, California, North Carolina, Ohio, Alabama and New York – the bagel capital of the nation – have seen them make a comeback. ‘now.

There are four varieties, all of which contain eggs and cheese. Three are with meat – bacon, sausage or steak – and one that is just egg and cheese. The steak bagel adds grilled onions.

Prices vary depending on the restaurant. Bacon and sausage bagels sell for $4.69 at select outlets. The steak is more expensive at $5.39.

Jared Hefenfinger, an administrator of the Facebook group, told Inc.com: “Group members share contact information for their local franchisees and say, ‘Hey, message or call these people.’

“I can kind of tell you where they’ll be next, based on where the group is adding members from. I sent a message to one of the franchisees in Minnesota.

“He told me that in the last three weeks they had received more calls than in the last three years.”

It’s unclear whether the Facebook group played a key role in McDonald’s comeback, or whether it simply played a role. A likely explanation is that McDonald’s intended to bring back the bagesl and the group’s enthusiasm led to accelerating this project.

Fans reacted with joy on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.

“McDonald’s bagels are back…the world is healing,” one customer tweeted.

“Taking my official victory lap in my 4 year war with McDonald’s. Bagels are BACK,” posted another.

“We always listen to what they want and take their feedback into account when we make menu decisions.”

“While the bagel sandwiches are not available nationwide, they are a regional offering and are currently available at participating McDonald’s in several markets.”
