McConnell calls on Johnson to discuss Ukraine vote

Given the difficult internal politics for the Republican Party, as former President Donald Trump and his allies questioned sending additional aid to Ukraine, McConnell took care when interviewing s ‘leave the details to Johnson. Some conservatives have threatened to try to strip him of the presidency if he allows a vote on aid to Ukraine.

But after receiving widespread criticism from his own party in recent weeks, McConnell said he hoped “the majority of Democrats and Republicans in the House will do what we did in the Senate.”

“I have no advice on how he does it. That’s why we have conferences,” McConnell said, referring to the typical process of a House-Senate negotiation. “What I think is appropriate is for the House to be able to assert its will on Ukraine, which is obviously the most controversial part of what we’ve done.”

McConnell’s remarks come amid his ongoing effort to pass the foreign aid package before the war turns further against Ukraine. Congress hasn’t sent a new infusion of money to the allied country in 14 months. At the same time, the GOP leader has not asked Johnson to take back the Senate product — showing that McConnell, facing his own group of conservative rebels in the Senate, understands that Johnson has internal political challenges while he navigates a very slim majority in the House. .
