Maybe the happy ending wins the first Tony for South Korea

The South Koreans celebrate their first victory at the Tony Awards, which, according to them, highlights the status of their country as a cultural power.

The acclaimed production of Broadway of perhaps Happy End, which made its debut in South Korea almost a decade ago, won six Tonys, including the best musical.

Perhaps the happy ending concerns the romance between two humanoid robots living in a building on the outskirts of Seoul. He entered the ceremony for the awards ceremony on Sunday evening with 10 nominations.

With the Tones, the South Koreans have now won the four most coveted prizes for American entertainment. Squid Game won the Emmy Awards in 2022 while Parasite won four Oscars in 2020. The Soprano Sumi Jo won a Grammy in 1993.

Sunday, the South Korean lyricist Hue Park and the American composer Will Aronson won the Tony for the best original score and the best book of a musical.

Before making their debut on Broadway with perhaps a happy ending in 2024, the pair, which met as a student from New York University, wrote the musical in English and Korean.

“It’s incredible!” An article on reading wires. “I heard that the Broadway version was even more polite. I am so proud that Korea becomes a real cultural power.”

“It looks like a dream come true for the Korean wave,” reads another article. “I am just as delighted as when Parasite won the Oscars, Squid Game won the Emmys and Han Kang received the Nobel Prize.”

The former Glee star, Darren Criss, who played one of the robots, Oliver, won the best main actor in a musical. It was his first victory of Tony.

The musical, which also features Helen J Shen as a Robot Claire, was already on a sequence of this prize -ceremony season.

He has banged some of the best prices to external Critics Circle Awards and Drama League Awards this year.

First of all Directed by Kim Dong-Yon, perhaps Happy Ending was presented in first in Seoul in 2016 with great renowned. It has since been revived several times in South Korea and abroad – in Korean and English.

Perhaps the success of Happy Ending occurs while South Korean artists continue to innovate in entertainment, especially with acts of K-Pop like BTS and Blackpink dominating music in recent years.

It also serves as a window on Korean culture, according to some social media users.

“It is surprising that Korean elements like the island of Jeju, the fireflies and Hwabun (a pot of plants) were also kept in the version of Broadway”, reads an article on the wires.

“I already felt proud to see him nominated, but watching the local public react so positively made him even more special.”
