Now we are playing the waiting game.

Matt Rhule’s tenure for the Panthers didn’t go as planned in both seasons. Back-to-back five-win campaigns and no apparent growth have led to questions about Rhule’s employment status as 2022 enters, but if the dominoes start to fall, Rhule might not even be in Carolina to get by. worry about this coming season.

According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, Rhule could consider a return to the college ranks, but it could be a bit of a waiting game: Should Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh return to the NFL (as it’s been said for a long time), then Rhule would be interested in the Wolverines head coaching gig.

La Canfora reports that Rhule would be “top of the list” of coaches who could take the job, citing his precarious position with the Panthers as a big reason. Rhule has been tied to college jobs for the past four months, but remains in Carolina.

Interestingly, La Canfora also reports that “several NFL head coaches” are reportedly interested in the Michigan Open, but Rhule is the only one named in the report.

It’s unclear when, if ever, Harbaugh will leave Ann Arbor for a return to the NFL, but his name has been attached to several head coaching openings, including the Raiders and Dolphins.

Rhule was criticized for the performance of the Panthers and also for his confused personnel decisions. The Panthers left their young and much-loved offensive coordinator Joe Brady midway through the 2021 season, a move some saw as scapegoating Rhule Brady for bad offenses, and replaced him this week with former coach- Giants leader Ben McAdoo.

Rhule also had his sights set on Penn State, according to reports, before James Franklin signed an extension to remain coach of the Nittany Lions.

College jobs can wait, but for now, Rhule is still the rule in Carolina.
