Ireland captain Katie McCabe and Matildas goalkeeper Caitlin Foord confirmed one of world football’s worst-kept secrets this week, by officially announcing themselves as a couple on Instagram.
Rumors surrounding the Arsenal teammates have been rife since a fiery love triangle emerged during last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup – and now, almost 12 months later, the cat is out of the bag thanks to a single word in a message.
Foord and McCabe are currently on holiday together in Rome, with the Matildas star sharing a host of happy snaps from their time away.
She posted the images with the caption: “Sick leave in Rome.”
Injured Matildas captain Sam Kerr took the opportunity to indulge in some light-hearted banter, replying: “Real sick leave?” with a laughing emoji.
But it was McCabe’s response that seemingly locked down their relationship, with the Irish star simply replying: “Amore” – the Italian word for love – including a loving eyes emoji.

Foord and McCabe’s romance was rumored for the past 12 months before making it official on social media.
The romance was rumored to have begun after McCabe broke up his long-term relationship with international teammate Ruesha Littlejohn just before the World Cup.
This led to rumors that McCabe and Foord were an item, but aside from the occasional picture or video of the two together, they remained low-key.
Littlejohn made her feelings known very well, with her Irish teammates having to physically restrain her after she aggressively approached Foord at the end of their World Cup clash. When players shared high fives, Littlejohn completely ignored Foord.
Foord had also recently become single after splitting from Swiss midfielder and Arsenal teammate Lia Walti, adding weight to the rumors.
“It is now clear (sic) that there is drama between Katie, Reusha and Caitlin,” one Tik Tok user wrote.
“Ruesha, this is so personal,” another wrote.
Some have suggested the recent holiday to Rome (pictured) could even be an anniversary for Foord and McCabe.
The couple was also spotted vacationing together in Australia for Christmas and New Year 2023.

Foord declined to comment at the time. However, now that their relationship appears Instagram official, their current costars couldn’t be happier.
However, one follower wasn’t happy, posting a vomit emoji and receiving a quick scolding from McCabe who posted: “Who do you think you are?” with a skull emoji.
However, most fans loved every moment of it.
“Just the cutest who thought tough girl Katie McCabe could be so cute,” one follower replied.
“I love that they don’t hide it anymore and just be themselves!” Good for both of you, said another.
“Rome is a great place for birthdays,” posted another in a cheeky reference to the calendar compared to last year’s World Cup.
Others suggested that while this post might be the “rocky launch” of their relationship, those in the know have known about their romance for much longer than that.
“People say ‘hard launch’ like they forgot New York,” one follower posted.
McCabe and Foord were pictured enjoying the Christmas holidays together last year, with the Irish star wearing a personalized bracelet reading ‘Foord’.
