Two very entertaining golf days are in the books of Augusta National, where a windy afternoon made the rating conditions more difficult over the day.
These are the numbers and notes of Tour 2 of the 89th Masters tournament.
1 and 1 One day after a brilliant 65, Justin Rose gathered a more workers’ round of 71 to take ahead in the weekend at the Masters. Rose used a conservative approach to her tee shots in Tour 2, hitting the driver of the tee only five times – half more than he did in the first round. Analytically speaking, it borne fruit, because Rose won about two TEE on Friday two strokes than in her first round.
The most responsible club in Rose’s position is its putter. From 2019 to 2024, Rose was one of the three qualified players for an average of a complete or more brain accident on the Greens per turn at the Masters. He threw this trend into overdrive this week, earning more than seven blows in the process of making 36 holes. It is not only the best on the field, it is almost double what any other player has accumulated.
2 It is the 10th Masters Round Rose has led or co-directed, twice as much as any other player without victory in history. At 44, Rose is the oldest player to lead the masters after the second round since Raymond Floyd led by a stroke in 1990.
This is the third time that Rose kept the pure and simple advance after Tour 1 and Tour 2 in a Masters (2004, 2021). Since 1980, there have been eight other cases of a player leading squarely after each of the first two laps. Only one of these players – Jordan Spieth in 2015 – won. Since 2000, there have been 28 other cases of a player leading a male major with a blow with two laps to play. Only six (21%) won that week.
If he wins, Rose would establish masters records for the oldest winner and most departures (20) before winning a first green jacket. He would also win his second major 12 years after his first (US Open 2013), the longest gap in the history of modern male golf.
3 and 3 Bryson Dechambeau, who made only one Bogey in his second round of 68. The day of Dechambeau was highlighted by birdies following four and five, reversing a trend that tormented him at the start of his master’s career. From 2016 to 2024, Bryson was combined by 22 on the three, four and five holes to Augusta National – the second worst of all the players of this period when you exclude the old champions.
Although he runs the tournament at a distance of driving in two days, the skillful button of Dechambeau owes the lion’s share of credit. He ranks first on the field this week in queues around green, with more than three to come to the round on Friday.
This is the fourth time that Dechambeau has started a major championship with consecutive towers in the 1960s. In the other three majors – the US Open 2020, 2024 PGA and US Open – it finished first, second and first.
4 Twenty-four hours after it seemed that the dreams of Rory McILroy to finish the Grand Colem in 2025 were destroyed, on Friday 66 made it void in driving when entering the weekend. This is the sixth time in McILroy’s career, he has drew 66 years or less at Augusta National, tied in the second round of these towers in the history of the tournament. The others with six or more are Tiger Woods (eight), Jack Nicklaus (Six) and Spieth (Six). This trio has combined to win a dozen green jackets.
In all the majors, it is the 21st career round of McILroy 66 or better. Since the first masters in 1934, only Woods (28) has more such cycles. The Six Tours Sans Bogey from McILroy at Masters have been the greatest number of players since its beginnings in 2009.
The first four holes of the nine seconds of McILroy transformed a promising return into a full fruit load in the ranking. Rory carded scores of 3-3-3-3 on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th holes on Friday. This is just the second time in the past 40 years that a player has made four three consecutive on these holes in a round – Hideki Matsuyama also did it 10 years ago in the last round.
Rory’s iron game was great on Friday. He struck 14 of the 18 green regulations and won almost 3 1/2 strokes with his approach game, his plus in a single round in 10 years.
5 With the wind that picks up the afternoon, the first half of the draw had a separate advantage on Friday. None of the eight players getting 68 years old or better on Friday came from the last half of Tee’s times. During two days, players who released the disappearance early had a total score on average of 36 holes of 146.7, about a higher stroke than their competing colleagues on the other side of the draw.
A notable part of the later wave on Friday was the title champion Scottie Scheffler, who equaled a Masters career summit with five Bogeys. Scheffler was not as clear on the Greens around 2 as in the first round, losing a stroke at the installation of the land. Despite this – and the fact that Scheffler is classified outside the top 30 to two laps in both strokes won over the TEE and the approach – the world n ° 1 is firmly in the running to win a third green jacket.
Before the winds resumed it, Scheffler was imperturbable. He played the first 23 holes without Bogey, a personal record in a tournament he mainly dominated since his inception. Its presence as a scenario this week seems inevitable: its average weekend score of 70.7 at the Masters is equal for the best of all time among players with five or more cuts.
6. Corey Conners is tied in third row, its best position of 36 holes in major since the division of the advance after two laps at the PGA 2023 in Oak Hill. Conners showed his exceptional iron game on Friday, picking up more than two shots on the field with his approach. He struck 16 green regulations, a career summit in all masters, and mostly equaled in the area around 2.
Shane Lowry started this masters with consecutive towers under, a first of her accomplished career. Lowry was one of the six players on the field on Friday with two shots or several shots acquired an approach and at least a stroke won over the Greens. This is the second time that Lowry has been in the top five to 36 holes at Augusta National. In 2022, he was tied in second row, five shots behind Scheffler, before finally finishing equally for third place.
7 Among the trio seated four in mind, Jason Day, who made his lonely Bogey this week the 18th hole on Friday. Day has almost become the second player in the history of the masters to play the first two bogy free laps. In 1979, Ed Sneed went without imperfection on his dashboard for the first two days. Sneed would lose a three -stroke lead with three holes to play, opening the door to the victory of the Fuzzy Zueller qualifiers.
Despite the fence with consecutive bogeys, Viktor Hovland is also part of the group at 4 sous. Hovland was brilliant with his iron game on Friday, winning more than three strokes with his approach. Only three players on the field have done more birdies than Hovland (11) on two laps this week.
8 On Thursday, Nick Dunlap became the first player outside the senior division (50 years and over) to make a score of 90 or worse at the Masters in almost 70 years. His first brutal day, however, opened an opportunity to take an obscure recovery record at Augusta National. The largest improvement in Tour 1 Tour 2 by Masters History belongs to Craig Wood, who in 1936 began the week with scores of 88-67.
Dunlap did not quite break the record but shot a 71 Friday – remarkable in the shadow of his experience in the opening round. The improvement of 19 strokes is the largest in Tour 1 around 2 in any male major since the 1966 open championship in Muirfield, when Robin Davenport went 94-72. Since the first Masters in 1934, it was only the fifth time that a player has shot 19 or more shots on the turn 2 than in Tour 1.
9. Bernhard Langer, who has long announced that it would be his last masters as a competitor, almost broke the record for the oldest player to make the cup. Changing, 67, missed a putt from 11 feet to 18 years old who would have kept it inside the line to play on weekends.
Twice champion of the masters, Langer led all the players of the two shots won a total of a turn and a cumulative score at the node at Augusta National from 1986 to 1993. Only eight players in the history of the tournament have official blows than Langer, which was induced in the World Golf Hall of Fame more than two decades.
Fred Couples, 65, pulled a second round 77, missing the cup by two strokes. Thursday, couples became the second oldest player to break it by a masters.
10 Thirty -one of the last 34 winners of the Masters were four strokes of the advance entering the third round. Since the victory of Nicklaus Magic 1986 (it has been tied in 17th row), all the masters champion, except one, have been part of the top 10 to 36 holes (Charl Schwartzel, equal to the 12th row in 2011).
The largest deficit of 36 holes overcome to win the Masters is eight Jack Burke Jr. Jack in 1956.
