Teacher Holds Classroom Mock Slave Auction

Parents were informed by letter that a teacher held a “impromptu mock slave auction” in January. The correspondence explained that the teacher was discussing the transatlantic slave trade when she asked “two Children sitting in front of the Hall, who were colored, stood up.”

The teacher then “discussed physical attributes (i.e. teeth and strength) students who played the role of slaves.

The shocking event was reported to Gregory Martineau, superintendent of public schools in Northborough and Southborough, a district located a half-hour from Boston. Martineau said the teacher’s actions violated district values and were “unacceptable.”

Teacher uses the N word

Additionally, in April, the same teacher used the N-word while reading a book. The superintendent said: “It was then brought to the district’s attention that the ‘N-word’ did not appear in the book.”

Martineau said: “Dehumanizing words such as insults should not be uttered by employees or students. Using such words can harm students and negatively impact an open discussion on a particular topic.
