Maryland hired Buzz Williams as a male basketball coach on Tuesday, passing quickly after Kevin Willard left the terraaps to take the post of Villanova.
Maryland quickly passed after the departure of Kevin Willard, hiring another coach with a lot of experience at a high level.
Buzz Williams changes jobs again.
Maryland hired Williams as a male basketball coach on Tuesday, bringing a candidate accomplished after the release of Willard to take the post of Villanova. Williams arrives after six seasons in Texas A&M. He also trained to Virginia Tech, Marquette and New Orleans.
He will be the first to train in Big East, ACC, the Southeast Conference and Big Ten, according to Sportradar.
“It is an honor and a privilege of being appointed head coach of the male basketball team at the University of Maryland,” Williams said in a statement. “I promise to maintain the history of maryland basketball and to make the proud Terp nation of men who represent this institution.”
Maryland said he would present Williams at a press conference on Wednesday. Willard left for Villanova last weekend after leading the terraaps at Sweet 16.
Williams took the Aggies to the NCAA tournament in each of the last three seasons.
“We would like to thank Buzz for his years of service towards our male basketball program,” said Texas A&M sports director, Trev Alberts. “We are delighted with the future of Aggie basketball, and we will find the right leader for our program.”
Williams’ first task consists in bringing a certain stability to Maryland after a few tumultuous weeks. Around the same time, the Terps began their NCAA tournament, Willard complained about a lack of support for the school program – and the sports director Damon Evans left for SMU.
Colleen Sorem is now the interim announcement, and she was able to land Williams, who brought Marquette to three Sweet 16s and Virginia Tech to one.
“We are delighted to bring a coach of the Buzz Williams caliber to the University of Maryland,” said Sorem. “His incredible success record in three eminent basketball programs speaks for himself, but we were also impressed by his tireless work ethics and his dedication to build a program in the right way. He adopts the high expectations here in Maryland and we are all delighted to start this new era in Maryland basketball. ”
Darryll Pines, the president of the school, said that finding the right coach was essential to the continuous success of the program.
“With an exemplary recording of competitive success and a commitment demonstrated to ensure leadership and development for our students athletes, the Buzz Williams coach is the ideal coach to move us forward,” said Pines. “We could not be more delighted to welcome him.”
Williams, 52, who is from Greenville, Texas, is one of the 12 active Division I coaches to win at least one NCAA tournament match with three different programs. His deepest race took place in 2013 when he took Marquette to the Elite Eight.
Willard spent three seasons in Maryland, taking him to the NCAA twice. The team of this season – with a departure unit nicknamed the “Crab Five” – came strong towards the end of the season. But the school confirmed on Monday that two starters were in the transfer portal, and the star of Big Man Derik Queen was not communicated about his future after having launched a first ceremonial throw in the first round of the Baltimore Orioles.
