Maryland hires Buzz Williams: Terps Poach Texas A & M Coach to replace Kevin Willard after the controversial release

The Maryland hires the Texas coach A & M Buzz Williams to succeed Kevin Willard, the school announced on Tuesday. The AGGIES coach will take over a program without Sitting sports director after Maryland Ad Damon Evans left for the same job in SMU last month.

“By directing this program, I promise to maintain the history of maryland basketball and to make the proud Terp nation of men who represent this institution,” Williams said in a school press release.

The former coach of Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and Marquette holds a career record of 373-228. Williams has spent the last six seasons at College Station and has guided the Texas A&M program to three consecutive places in the NCAA tournament. Texas A&M lost against Michigan No. 5 in the second round of the NCAA tournament last month. “We are delighted to bring a coach of the Buzz Williams caliber to the University of Maryland,” said interim sports director of Maryland, Colleen Sorem in the school press release. “His incredible success record in three important basketball programs speaks for himself, but we were also impressed by his tireless work ethics and his dedication to build a program in the right way. He adopts the high expectations here in Maryland and we are all delighted to start this new era in Maryland basketball.”

After reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016, Willard left to take the vacant work in Villanova less than 48 hours after losing against the head of N ° 1 in Florida. The massive school exodus continued earlier this week when Maryland Star Guards Ja’kobi Gillespie and Rodney Rice entered the transfer portal in the middle of a cloud of conflicts with power brokers.

Maryland striker Julian Reese and goalkeeper Selton Miguel are not eligible. Star Center Derik Queen will probably go to the draft of the NBA 2025 as a choice of projected lottery.

This means that Williams will have to replace all of the best alignments to start university basketball. The five starters of Maryland collected on average at least 12 points per game. The terraaps were the only basketball team in division L to accomplish this feat. The starters of Maryland have combined to score 69 points per game in total – the most 10th by a NCAA tournament team in the past 10 years.

On the positive side, Maryland is expected to receive a 2 million dollars buyback on the Willard contract. In particular, Williams’ A & M contract repurchase increased from $ 2 million to $ 1 million on Tuesday.

Under Williams, Texas A&M won at least 21 games in four consecutive seasons. Dating from his stay at Virginia Tech, Williams went to the NCAA tournament in the past six of the past nine years.

In the days preceding the Sweet 16 Clash last week with Florida, there was optimism in the Maryland program that Willard would remain. The school offered him a contract that would make him one of the 10 main best-paid coaches in university basketball, Several sources have told John Talty de CBS Sports.

“He played us like a drum,” the name of Maryland Barry Gossett told CBS Sports, whose name adorns the next 52 million dollar basketball performance center and 44,000 square feet, at CBS Sports.

In the hours preceding the most consecutive basketball match in Maryland in almost a decade, Willard remained silent on the subject in the midst of rumors that he left for the position in Villanova. The players in the locker room of Maryland, like Queen, spoke to CBS Sports tension around the program.

“First of all, (coach Kevin Willard) wants to win,” said Queen at CBS Sports when he asked him about coach rumors last week. “Whatever happens after the season, arrives.”

With a coach now in place, Maryland will have to work quickly to replace most of a list that won 27 games during the 2024-25 campaign.
