‘Marvel Snap’ Developer Wasn’t Informed It Would Be Banned, Recommends VPN

If the fact that Marvel Snap was banned and taken offline in the United States alongside TikTok’s ban wasn’t strange enough, the story took an even stranger turn.

Many players were furious with US developer Marvel Snap’s Second Dinner because there was no warning about it and nothing about how in-game purchases would simply evaporate with the game being taken offline. Well, there’s a good reason for that: Second Dinner was not informed of this decision at all by its parent company ByteDance.

The official Marvel Snap account posted this on Twitter after the ban:

“Unfortunately, MARVEL SNAP is temporarily unavailable in US app stores and is not available to play in the United States.

This breakdown surprises us and was not planned. MARVEL SNAP isn’t going anywhere.

We are actively working to get the game available as quickly as possible and will update you as soon as we have more to share.

Marvel Snaps Director of Development Ben Brode actually recommends players use a VPN, which can make it appear like you’re playing from Canada, to temporarily bypass the ban.

All this happens because all ByteDance apps are now offline due to the fallout from the US TikTok ban that was just implemented yesterday. Even though ByteDance had previously divested itself of its Nuverse gaming arm, that apparently wasn’t enough to avoid this fate.

It is beyond incredible that an entire game is taken offline without any notice to its entire development team, who in turn were unable to inform their fans of what was happening. This obviously affects everyone who works at Second Dinner, a group of creators who play the game primarily to make a living from their audience, and then everyone who plays the game who has shelled out big bucks for card variants for a collection that they can no longer. access.

The running theory is that this will all end up being a stunt, and that when Donald Trump takes office tomorrow, he will delay this ban or not enforce it or something to keep TikTok in line. The irony of the situation is that years ago, Trump was at the forefront of trying to get TikTok banned, but he changed his mind at some point during the next election when it seemed that TikTok was starting to benefit his campaign. He is now quoted in their offline message, which directly states that ByteDance will work with Trump to resolve this issue. The CEO was invited to its inauguration.

So this may not last very long. Second Dinner’s social media manager already says the team is working on it: “Don’t worry, we’re working on a fix to get everything restored as quickly as possible.” You don’t need to be free for too long, brother. I’m not entirely sure how this works, with ByteDance apparently doing this unilaterally, but hopefully players will receive updates soon.
