Elizabeth Olsen recognizes how Marvel has changed culturally in the Zeitgeist since its popularity has skyrocketed – and has made it a successful star in the process.
The actress, who comes from the independent world, played Wanda Maximoff de Marvel, alias the Scarlet Witch, for a decade, including on “Wandavision” on television. Olsen said in NPR’s “Wild Card” podcast that she was first “really proud” to play as superheroes. Now, however, she believes that the conversation around Marvel projects has become tainted.
“When I started Marvel, I thought that the films were so, so great. I thought it was so big stories on a Greek type which reflected politics and culture in a really beautiful way,” said Olsen. “And so I really felt proud to jump into it. And then, in the past 10 years, it has taken this story, like, it is a hot catch: if an actor says that he wants or if they never make a Marvel film or not.”
Olsen explained that she had since been determined to assume roles that reflect her “personal taste” alongside more Marvel. “I think that is why, because I have spent so many years of Marvel, that I have the impression that all the other jobs I have to do must really reflect my personal taste,” she said, “because I don’t like to be part of this world-and I am proud of what I could do with the character a creative person in the world and what are my goals. »»
Olsen recently directed the film “The Assessment” and always tries to obtain the “Love Child” by Todd Solondz after funding for the independent author’s film was drawn from the last minute in 2024. She also appeared in “His Three Daughters” by Netflix, an independent film directed by Azazel Jacobs, in 2024.
“I think that (I have to prove) my taste in a creative way,” added Olsen. “I think I have not always managed to make choices in my work that is aligned with my personal taste and it is something that I have the impression of trying to prove when I meet people, especially if it is a work -type meeting.”
The actress “Doctor Strange in the Multaveveus of Madness” had previously approached feeling “frustrated” in the face of her personal MCU contracts when he tried to balance blockbusters with independent films. She had to leave the “lobster” of Yorgos Lanthimos to film a feature film “Avengers”. She also played in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Avengers: Infinity War”.
“I had this job security, but I lost these pieces which, in my opinion, were more part of my being. And the more I moved away, the less I planned myself,” said Olsen in 2022 in an interview with the New York Times. “It took me away from the physical ability to do certain work that I thought I was more aligned on the things I appreciated as a member of the public. And it’s me the most honest. “
