Many Premier League supporters thought it was a given that Liverpool would reach the Europa League final this season.
It was widely believed that Jurgen Klopp’s final match in charge of the club would either be the final of this competition on May 22 or the showpiece FA Cup match three days later. Instead, Liverpool’s form abandoned them in the run-up.
Many have pointed to their failure to win at Old Trafford in the FA Cup and Premier League as a turning point.
But it may actually have been a 3-0 home defeat to Atalanta that caused this slowdown. In terms of overall performance, Liverpool should have won both matches against Manchester United. When they faced the Italian side at Anfield, they were deservedly beaten.
In England, post-match attention naturally fell on Liverpool, who then salvaged some pride in an admittedly futile 1-0 victory in Bergamo in the second leg.
In Italy, the result was seen as arguably the greatest of Gian Piero Gasperini’s eight hugely successful years in charge of Atalanta.
The innovative Italian coach has indeed done a fantastic job since taking charge in 2016. The only thing missing from his tenure is a piece of silverware.
Atalanta were minutes away from reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2020, while they twice finished runners-up in the Coppa Italia under Gasperini. But the club has not won a trophy since 1963.
There is no obligation for Atalanta to do so given their size compared to others, but going all the way in the Europa League would be the icing on the cake for their veteran boss.
Needless to say, Marseille will have a lot to say about this. The French have never won this tournament before, having finished second in 1999, 2004 and 2018.
Liverpool will be away, but one of these two teams will participate in the final on May 22.

Marseille will hope home advantage will allow them to overtake Atalanta, but the Italian side must not be written off.

These are two offensive-minded teams and that bodes well for Thursday’s game.
Atalanta may be the away team in the first leg, but as they showed at Anfield, they won’t just sit back and hope for the best.
Their 33 Serie A matches yielded an average of 2.97 goals. In the Europa League, half of their 10 matches have produced over 2.5 goals.
Marseille’s 31 Ligue 1 matches have averaged 2.74 goals, while their 12 Europa League matches have averaged 3.67.
