Marsch: ‘Lack of discipline’ led to USA’s Copa America elimination

Canada coach Jesse Marsch expressed disappointment with the United States’ poor performance at the Copa América as his team prepares to face Venezuela in the quarterfinals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Friday.

The 50-year-old American coach led Canada to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Peru to finish second in Group A behind defending champions Argentina, while the United States failed to advance past the group stage after a 2-1 loss to Panama followed by a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay.

“I’d like to say I’m just focused on what we’re doing here in Canada, but obviously I’m paying attention to the U.S. men’s national team like I always do, and like you, I’m sad,” the coach told “FOX Soccer Now.”

“I’m disappointed with the performances, the lack of discipline. I think we tried to embody a lot of things in the game in the United States, and we always believed in this group of players.”

The former Leeds United boss added that Gregg Berhalter’s side must find solutions to their problems.

“I’m not here every day, so I’m not aware of what’s going on, but it’s definitely not what we expected going into this tournament,” Marsch said.

Marsch was considered a leading candidate for the USMNT head coach position after Berhalter’s contract expired after the 2022 World Cup, but Marsch’s agent surprisingly announced in June 2023 that Marsch would not get the job. The following day, Berhalter was rehired by US Soccer.

“I have great respect for U.S. Soccer, but I went through a process with them, right? And I’m not going to get into the details, but I wasn’t treated very well during the process,” Marsch said after losing the U.S. Soccer job.

Canada hopes to advance to the semifinals with a victory over Venezuela, which finished top of Group B after winning all three of its matches.
