Mark Zuckerberg teases a return in 2025 to “OG Facebook”

The Meta-PDG Mark Zuckerberg teased a “return to the Facebook OG” as part of its main objectives for 2025 when calling the fourth quarters of Wednesday with investors. Although the company is short of details on specific changes in stores, it is clear that Meta desperately needs young Facebook users to maintain themselves for the next generation.

Asked about his plans for the “Facebook OG”, Zuckerberg replied that it was one of Meta’s areas of intervention for the coming year and something in which the company planned to invest and spend time .

“I think there are a lot of opportunities to make (Facebook) much more culturally influential than today,” he noted.

The executive has also warned investors that these modifications to Facebook may require certain compromises in terms of “maximization of short -term trade results” – a signal that income may be assigned. He said product changes would begin to deploy within a year.

“I think some of that will come back in a way to the way Facebook was used at the origin of the time,” said Zuckerberg, while being tight on any other detail.

The drop in interest in Facebook in young people becomes a problem for the technology giant, especially since its main adult users continue to age.

According to a study by Emarketer published last August, Gen Z American users aged 18 to 24 spend much more time on Tiktok, followed by Instagram and Snapchat – twice as much time, in fact, compared to the total American adult population. Meanwhile, a survey in 2024 by Pew Research revealed that the use of Facebook by American adolescents (13-17) had dropped sharply in the years from 71% in 2014 to 2015 at only 33%.

Meta has been aware of these challenges for a long time, after having launched an overhaul focused on its aging social network in October 2024, promising greater importance on local community information, videos and Facebook groups, among others.

The company now aims to rely on these changes with a new refreshment of the Facebook product in 2025, although its ability to compete with the favorite application of Gen Z, Tiktok, remains uncertain.

In addition, users of the Z generation sent a strong signal that they are ready to go from Meta, if Tiktok had to remain banned in the United States instead of returning to the Meta platform, the young downloaded Rednote, Another Chinese application similar to Tiktok, before and during the prohibition briefly applied in the United States Tiktok.

It can be difficult, if not impossible, for Facebook to attract young users again by returning to its “OG” roots. The company had already attempted to revive its feeling of original exclusivity by launching a side of Facebook called Campus in 2020 which only addressed university and university students. This effort was closed a year and a half later after failing to take off.

Meta has also tried to use other services, such as online meetings, to attract new users, with little success.

Meanwhile, new social networks are under construction on the open social web, propelled by protocols like ActivityPub, used by controlled platform mastodon belonging to Big Tech. As these networks grow, they will become competition for efforts like a “Facebook OG”.

Meta has been working to protect investors from the drop in Facebook for years.

In the fourth quarter of 2019, META (then called Facebook) introduced new statistics for investors called active people from Family Daily and family active people. Later, in the first quarter of 2024, Meta took measures to distant parameters by application by eliminating active and monthly users daily in its quarterly reports in favor of the metrics of his family of application.

In her file at the time, Meta said that the decision was aimed at better showing the number of people who got involved with all her products, not just Facebook and Messenger.
