Mark Cuban’s control of the Mavericks is unwritten as the team is sold

There is some uncertainty as to how long Mark Cuban will stay with the Mavericks.

Last month, explosive news broke that Cuban would sell the majority stake in the NBA franchise to a group led by Dr. Miriam Adelson, the widow of the late casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.

The sale was finalized on Wednesday.

Although it was previously announced that Cuba would retain control of basketball operations, the duration of this agreement does not appear to be set in stone.

Longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein reported On Wednesday, “Mark Cuban was promised continued control of basketball operations with the Mavericks. However, the sales contract which establishes the Adelson and Dumont families as majority owners of Dallas contains no details on Cuban’s role.

Cuban, Stein added, retained a 27 percent stake in the franchise.

ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon later posted a tweet attributing Cuba’s confirmation of the report.

“Mark Cuban acknowledged that Patrick Dumont will have the “last word” as governor of the Mavs. But Cuban says he will run basketball operations with the sole goal of winning,” MacMahon tweeted.

Dumont is president and chief operating officer of Las Vegas Sands, the casino chain controlled by the Adelson family.

The sale of the Mavericks was particularly surprising given how much Cuban identity has been tied to ownership of the franchise since he purchased it in 2000.

Until the news broke, one would have thought that the team would be passed down through one’s family from generation to generation, as is the case with many other franchises in professional sports.

The announced plan for the ownership group is to set its sights on building an entertainment complex, including a new casino and arena, if and when gambling is legalized in the state of Texas.
