Mark Cuban has a suggestion for Americans: “Buy a lot of consumables now.”
Cuban published a post on Bluesky on Wednesday shortly after President Donald Trump announced radical rates that would hit more than 180 countries:
“It is not a bad idea to go to the local Walmart or Big Box retailer and buy a lot of consumables now. From soap toothpaste, everything you can find a storage space, buy before they reconstruct the inventory,” Cuban wrote.
“Even if it is made in the United States, they will increase the price and blame it on the prices,” added Cuban.
Trump on Wednesday announced reciprocal rates on all countries that have imposed prices on American products. The prices, which, according to Trump, will start at a reference rate of 10%, will allocate 185 countries.
“On April 2, 2025, we will forever remember when the day when American industry is reborn, the day of destiny of America was recovered and the day we started to make America rich,” said Trump.
While companies can absorb some of the cost of prices, American consumers are likely to see higher prices on items such as cars and grocery store.
Last month, the president of the federal reserve, Jerome Powell, told journalists that “a good part” of the increasing inflation forecasts of the Fed flows from Trump’s pricing plans.
Business Insider experts have spoken, however, said that the Cuban concerns that prices increase prices are valid – but that the purchase of panic could harm supply chains and cause prices.
“Just as I said during COVID, no one should be panic and Clorox toilet paper, and nobody should do it now,” Bi Margaret Kidd, Associate Professor of Supply and Logistics Technology at Houston University, told Bi Margaret Kidd.
Kidd said consumers must be “conservative with our resources” because price increases “occur in all areas”.
“We don’t know how it will be playing,” Kidd said.
Chris Tang, professor of the UCLA and management expert in the global supply chain, told BI that Cuban suggestion could lead to “greater problems”.
“This type of change change would actually exacerbate this price increase. If the demand is more stable, the price is more stable. If everyone begins to store toothpaste and toilet paper, prices are increasing,” said Tang.
Admittedly, this is not the first time that Cuban has criticized Trump’s pricing policies. The star of “Shark Tank” approved Vice-President Kamala Harris during her presidential campaign last year, qualifying her as a “pro-enterprise” candidate.
In September, Trump said he would impose a 200% rate on John Deere if the agricultural equipment company moved to Mexico.
“This lack of understanding of business is crazy,” Cuban wrote in a post.
Impose higher prices on American companies that their Chinese counterparts meant that “Chinese products will be cheaper to sell in the United States than in the American company“Added Cuban.
“A good way to destroy a legendary American company and increase costs for American buyers,” Cuban wrote.
Cuban and the White House did not respond to requests for BI comments.
