Marines working to understand how to sort lovers and enemies

The Marine Corps learns to fight with non -mixed air systems, and there is much to understand. A chief of the Marine Corps said that the potential for confusion on future battlefields crowded “haunts” his dreams.

“Know what good guys against the bad guys, knowing what to kill and not kill”, “this kind of thing” haunts my dreams, “said the director of the Marine Corps last week. Expo to Washington, DC.

The thrust of developing counter-Uas capacities coincides with service efforts to develop its offensive capacities.

The service has created a new team of attack drones and aims to reproduce it in the body, using competition to imitate the stressors of combat. He also set up the UAS advisory advice to accelerate comments from the troops on the ground to the senior Pentagon leaders who can make partners’ requests to industry.

Drones quickly become an absolute priority, especially since the world looks at what How the Warfare drone takes place in Ukraine.

In future fights, the Marines will have to be able to identify not only the friendly or enemies systems with useful fatal charges, but also systems such as logistical drones reappoint and perhaps even drones for the evacuation of victims, which could create new concerns concerning the identification of medical systems for wounded enemy fighters, which are protected by medical conventions.

The friendly and enemy identification of drones has become more and more important in Ukraine, where an Ukrainian drone operator previously declared to Business Insider that it was not uncommon for the troops to end up blocking everything nearby in a “congested battle space”.

Combat images of front lines in Ukraine have highlighted the confusion that can quickly come from drones. In the chaos of the battle, it can be difficult to determine which quadcopter is friendly and which could soon abandon the grenades above.

Colonel Scott Cuomo, the commander of the Battalion for the weapons of the service of the service and the new team of attack drones, is considering a not so distant future for the Marines in which the requests for identification of the UAS will oblige the troops to explore procedures of deconfliction of strict aerial space.

“Someone will coordinate fires, just as we have always done,” said Cuomo, referring to practices to ensure strikes of planes, artillery or other weapons can occur without harmful to friendly forces. “So there is a lot to rely on what we have done in the past,” he said.

What could this approach include in practice? When a navy sends a UAS with a payload, “you will tell someone you will do,” said Cuomo, referring to the detailed coordination of fires between the infantry units and their command centers.

The identification of the friend or the offer is far from being the only challenge of drone operations of battlefield. Ukraine and Russia were forced to combat huge drone losses, not only for one -way attacks but also for electronic war.

Reluctance to waste too many UAS systems can add more complexity to the problems of UAS identification. “We cannot necessarily adopt the approach that it does not matter if we lose 40% of our belongings,” added Hoewing. “It will not work for the navy.”

The loss of equipment is an anathema for the navies, which treat the responsibility of the equipment as a real estate principle. This can however contradict Ukraine lessons, where inexpensive drones are considered consumable and used as individual ammunition bullets.

There is a lot to be settled, but the only way for the navies to remove the pain from such a complicated supervision of the UAS will be more decorations and representatives, said Cuomo. “Give it to the navies, then find the training.”
