Marine Le Pen, the chief of the French far right, was found guilty of embezzlement by a criminal court in Paris on Monday and immediately prohibited from presenting himself to public functions for five years, triggering a democratic crisis in France.
The verdict actually prevented the current leader during the 2027 presidential election from participating, an extraordinary stage, but that of the president judge was necessary because no one has the right to “immunity in violation of the rule of law”.
Jordan Bardella, the protégé of Ms. Le Pen and a probable presidential candidate in her absence, said on social networks: “Not only was Marine Le Pen unjustly condemned, French democracy was executed.” The right -wing leaders across Europe, notably Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, seemed to agree.
“I’m a navy!” Mr. Orban said.
However, Sacha Houlié, a centrist legislator, asked: “Is our society really as sick that we are going to offend ourselves to what is no more than the rule of law?”
The verdict made Ms. Le Pen furious, an anti-immigrant nationalist politician who has already set up three failed presidential offers. Having dark and whispering “incredible”, she quickly left the courtroom before the judges finished reading her sentence.
She did not approach the dozens of camera teams outside the courtroom, but she had to talk about French television on Monday evening. She had spoken of her “serenity” before the hearing, but there was little evidence of this.
