Marco Reus ended his final home game for Borussia Dortmund in style with a superb free kick.
The midfielder has announced he will leave the club at the end of his contract this summer after 12 seasons with the Bundesliga giants.
As Dortmund took on Darmstadt in their final league clash of the season, supporters at Signal Iduna Park paid a moving tribute to the 34-year-old before kick-off.
During his time at the club, Reus made 427 appearances, scoring 169 times.
Before the teams emerged, ‘The Yellow Wall’ revealed a stunning mosaic of yellow and black with a number 11 jersey – Reus’ jersey number – featuring the message ‘Danke Marco’ which translates to ‘thank you Marco “.
The huge start for Reus was not limited to pre-match, with the midfielder having his moment to shine after Ian Maatsen’s opener.
Standing on a free kick from the edge of the box, Reus curled a magnificent effort over the wall and into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 for Dortmund, who went on to win 4-0.
Reus, replaced in the 82nd minute, was then given a guard of honor by his Dortmund teammates.
The attacking midfielder signed for Dortmund from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012 and has become one of the club’s most iconic stars.
Reus could make his final appearance for the club in the Champions League final with Real Madrid at Wembley and announced his plans in an emotional video earlier this month.
“Well, where should I start?” Reus said in a video posted on the club’s social media platforms.
“Dear BVB fans. I had the right to play in this magnificent stadium for 12 years. I have dedicated half my life to this club with many ups and downs. It was mostly highs, I would say.
“The club and I have made the decision not to extend my contract. It made me incredibly proud and I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to play for this club for so many years.
“It’s quite difficult for me right now to find the right words, however, it’s important for me to say it to you fans first. We also have a big goal in sight. We want to go to Wembley.
“We want to bring this trophy back to Dortmund again and that’s why it’s important that the decision has been made and that concludes this deal.
“Now we are all focusing on this big goal and we will see each other a few more times in this beautiful stadium.”
Reus also made a special gesture to the Dortmund fans at Signal Iduna Park by offering them free beer during the match.
“Thank you for everything! The farewell beer is on me. Yours Marco,” reads above one of the bars in an image shared on social media.
