On March 9, 1945, during the Second World War, more than 300 American B-29 bombers began the Meetinghouse operation, a massive fire bomb raid in Tokyo. The raid killed around 100,000 civilians, left 1 million homeless and destroyed 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) in the city.
