BOSTON – Marcel Hug from Switzerland made a blitz on the front of the field to win his eighth title of Boston Marathon Woelchair, winning the victory on Monday in the 129th edition of the race in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 34 seconds.
Susannah Scaroni, from the United States, won the female race for wheelchairs for the second time, ensuring that the “star banner” would play on Boylston Street in Copley Square on the day of the Patriots, the state holidays that commemorate the first shooting of the revolutionary war 250 years ago on Saturday.
The 39-year-old hug crossed the finish line in downtown Boston to win his fifth consecutive victory in the 50th anniversary race of the first official wheelchair finisher in Boston. Daniel Romanchuk in the United States finished second in 1:25:58, followed by Plat Jetze from the Netherlands in 1:30:16.
“It means a lot to win this year, 50 years of wheelchairs in Boston,” said Hug. “For me, it will take a while to achieve what it means, eight times earns. This is an incredible number.”
Hug and Romanchuk separated from the field and remained tightly over six miles. But Hug opened its doors on a three-minute advance advance and started to expand its advantage.
Hug’s last victory occurred a clear morning with starting temperatures in the 1950s. It made a much less eventful day for Hug, who recovered last year from an accident in the last part of the race on the road to victory.
