Map: 7.0 Magntitude earthquake near Tongs Promps in short tsunami alert

A major 7.0 -coarse earthquake hit the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake caused a brief “threat of tsunami” for the Tonga.

Preliminary reports of the American tsunami warning system said that the waves of tsunami were possible for the coasts less than 190 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, including those of the Tonga. The system published a clear opinion about an hour later, after a tsunami has hit materialized.

Tsunamis are a series of long waves caused by a large sudden displacement of water in the ocean, generally from a large earthquake on or below the bottom of the ocean. Tsunamis radiate in all directions of the epicenter and can cause dangerous and powerful coastal floods that can last hours or days.

The Temblor occurred at 1:18 in the morning of the Tonga at around 49 miles southeast of Pangai, Tonga, the USGS data show.

USGS data reported earlier than magnitude was 7.1.

While seismologists examine the available data, they can revise the indicated scale of the earthquake. Additional information collected on the earthquake can also encourage scientists to the USGS to update the Shake-Severity card.
