Manhattan Man Arrested – NBC New York

A man who had to be escorted from the scene of a Manhattan shooting where a mob tried to attack him as NYPD officers handcuffed him as part of a murder investigation is charged with concealing a human body, authorities said Tuesday.

Although he is not currently charged with murder in the case, the man has a history of arrests for murder — in 1994, when he allegedly blew up a house as his uncle went inside, investigators said.

He also faces charges of menacing and criminal possession of weapons in a separate case, the NYPD said.

It’s unclear whether prosecutors plan to pursue more serious charges against the man involved in the death of Yazmeen Williams, 31, whose body was found in a sleeping bag, also wrapped up, and dumped with other trash on a sidewalk on East 27th Street in Kips Bay on Friday. Police say Williams was shot in the head.

Investigators have ruled his death a homicide. It is unclear how long his body had been in the sleeping bag before the gruesome discovery.

Videos and photos shared on social media show what appears to be a normal-sized body covered in a dark sleeping bag, which is itself wrapped in black trash bags. Sources told NBC New York that the surveillance video appears to show a person in an electric wheelchair pulling the sleeping bag.

Police said a man in his 50s was arrested in connection with the incident. The crowd attempted to attack him. Officers and paramedics held the crowd back as punches were exchanged, while others were seen spitting at him.

Tensions were high until the man was placed in an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital.

The victim’s mother, Nicole Williams, was present when he was taken away.

“He’s disgusting… he looks like a piece of trash,” Williams said. “They were angry. He… took her life… threw my daughter in a trash bag.”

Information about the man’s attorney was not immediately available Tuesday.
